Scott Irwin, RSPA, CCM
Scott R. Irwin is a life-long racquets professional with significant past experience as a tennis director, college and professional coach, a tennis academy founder and club/pro shop owner. He has also worked extensively in the upper management of POA’s/HOA’s, racquet clubs, country clubs, resorts and the hospitality industry. A native of Los Angeles, California, Scott was a successful player on the US National junior circuit and graduated from La Jolla High School in 1975, where he went undefeated during the regular season and state championships on the 1975 California Interscholastic Federation Championship (CIF) team, winning the CIF state doubles title that year. Scott attended the University of Cincinnati from 1975-1977 and the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu from 1977-1979 on full athletic tennis scholarships. He was named Most Inspirational team member as a senior in 1978-1979 and then served as the Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at UH for the 1979-1980 season. Even today Scott holds one of the highest victory percentages in UH school tennis records and was part of the winningest men’s tennis team in UH athletics history in 1977- 1978.
During and following college, Scott participated on the professional tennis circuit, competing in ATP and satellite events in eighteen countries, winning one international singles and two doubles titles. In recent years, Scott has been ranked by the USTA as high as #1 in South Carolina, #1 in the South and Top 15 in the US while competing in various age groups from the Men’s Open 45’s to the 60’s. As he married and his professional playing career wound down, Scott has spent over 40 years directing tennis
programs and eventually managing entire club operations at country clubs, resorts and racquet clubs in the US and Canada. Scott has regularly worked as a visiting racquets professional over the past 35 years in Jamaica, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos.
Coaching and instructing tennis and pickleball is Scott’s passion, as he enjoys working with players of all abilities and helping their game improve with each session while exercising and having fun! During his career he has helped develop many Tennis Directors and Head Professionals through his mentoring.
He was the founder of the Edgewater Beach International Tennis Academy in Panama City Beach, FL, where his academy produced several ATP and WTA professionals as well as many nationally ranked players. Scott has owned and operated two tennis clubs during his career and served as the Administrator/Co-Head Coach for
the USTA Eastern North Carolina Area Training Center for 11 years. Scott is a member of the Club Managers Assn. of America holding the CCM designation. A member of the Racquet Sports Professional Assn. since 1980, he is a certified by the RSPA in both tennis and pickleball. In past years his pro shop was rated by Tennis Buyers Guide as one of the best in the US. He is a Life member of USTA and was honored to be the recipient of the RSPA Club Manager of the Year Award for the nine Southeastern US states both in 2021 and 2002.
